Blue Origin was founded in early 2000. Jeff Bezos launched the project primarily to advance private space exploration. The company is making consistent efforts for more accessible and better sustainable space travel. In this regard, it has achieved many milestones, including but not limited to the launch of a new Shepard rocket and the development of a new Glenn orbital vehicle.
All-Female Spaceflight
In a recent development, Blue Origin launched a unique trip on April 14, 2025. It was an eleven-minute suborbital flight that reached the Kármán line. This trip featured an all-female crew. The crew was comprised of Gayle King (journalist), Aisha Bowe (aerospace engineer), Katy Perry (singer), producer Kerianne Flynn, philanthropist Lauren Sánchez and researcher Amanda Nguyen. It was a significant achievement in space tourism and gender representation in space exploration. Click here to watch the complete video.
Future Outlook
Blue Origin plays an active role in NASA’s Artemis V program through its involvement in cutting-edge space projects. Its Blue Moon lander is designed to deliver cargo as well as astronauts to the Moon’s surface. With the ISS expected to retire by the early 2030s, Orbital Reef could become the cornerstone of commercial activity in Earth orbit. These projects are all leading the way to establish a sustainable human presence on the moon and even beyond.
Technological Advancements in Rockets
New Shepard is designed for suborbital flights and is considered one of the most reliable and safest vehicles for short-duration space journeys. It has successfully completed numerous missions.
New Glenn is a heavy-lift orbital rocket. It is engineered to carry payloads to both Geostationary Transfer Orbit (GTO) and Low Earth Orbit (LEO).
Among the key components of Blue Origin’s propulsion technology is its BE-4 engine. Its significance in terms of performance and reusability is due to using methane (liquefied natural gas) in combination with liquid oxygen as fuel. The mixture is commonly known as a methalox fuel mixture. It has replaced the Russian-made RD-180 engine and been selected by United Launch Alliance for their Vulcan Centaur rocket.
Conclusion
Blue Origin is making its way to becoming a leader in the landscape of private space tourism. The company is all set to play a significant role in humanity’s journey into space with its commitment to sustainability coupled with innovation.
