Capote: A Surprising Dive into Its Origins and Uses

The word “Capote” has many faces. Compote can appear in two entirely different contexts, as it changes its meaning across different languages and cultures. It can be associated with something as chic as fashion or as lethal as bullfighting. Let’s unfold the layers of this term.

The French Origin  

“Capote” is originally a French word, meaning an “overcoat” or a “hooded cloak”. It was part of literary English back in the 18^th century and generally referred to a type of outerwear. In the fashion world, Capote was not just an outer layer to protect against the cold but rather a fashion statement.

Later, it was used to describe the folding cover of the baby’s pram or collapsible top of the car.

In Spanish Bullfighting

The term Capote wears a different cloak in Spanish culture. This French-born word takes the identity of “cape” used by the toreador in bullfighting. The Capote is a large cape with yellow color on one side and pink on the other. It is used to lure and maneuver the bull in the early stage of the bullfight. It is different from the Muleta— a relatively smaller cape in red color.

Many of us are familiar with the word only through its association with Truman Capote. Capote was an American writer and screenwriter, known for his bold storytelling and psychological depth. Some of his notable works that brought him recognition include Breakfast at Tiffany’s and In Cold Blood. Many adaptations of In Cold Blood were also made.
